About Yuan

I’m Yuan, your Member of Parliament. I live in Woodley, and my family live in Earley. I will stay rooted in our community for as long as I continue to serve it.

My Early Years

My parents came to the UK when I was four years old with very little. I started primary school not knowing how to speak English – but I got a great education and went on to attend a brilliant university. I know how important the opportunities presented by our country are for young people, and the power of aspiration.

Rethinking Economics

I founded an education charity, called Rethinking Economics, that’s redefined the way students are taught about the economy. Ten years on, the charity is serving students in over a hundred universities around the world.

Economist

I’m an economist, who went to university during the financial crisis, and started work during the recession. That’s why I’m so passionate about making the economy better serve working people and our planet.

Journalist

As a journalist, I reported on the international economy and held big corporations to account – winning awards for my human rights investigations. I’ve been taking the same approach to my role on the Treasury Select Committee, where I’ve questioned the bosses of big banks, the Governor of the Bank of England, and the Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Today

I’m determined to rebuild trust in politics from the ground-up.

That’s why I’ve pledged to:

  • Never take a second job – I’m working full-time to deliver for my constituents.
  • Always live in our constituency, holding regular events to speak with constituents and build community ties.
  • Always engage in debate and political discussions in good faith – I’ve signed Compassion in Politics’ Civility Pledge.
